This course covers the operation and management of greenhouses and other controlled environments used in crop/horticultural production with emphasis on system design and construction, lighting methods and intensity, heating and cooling systems, growing media, plant nutrition, water quality and irrigation systems. This course also offers basic understanding of greenhouse production of plants, cultural control and practices specific to greenhouse production. $35 science fee. Course Outcomes: 1. Evaluate greenhouse design and construction materials ILOs 1 & 4. 2. Analyze water quality and irrigation systems ILOs 1, 2, & 4. 3. Examine the various types of control systems used in closed environments and be able to apply this knowledge to design basic manual or automated environmental control systems ILOs 1 & 4. 4. Evaluate greenhouse lighting systems for photoperiodism ILOs 1, 2, & 4. 5. Analyze the benefits of different greenhouse heating and cooling systems ILOs 1, 2, 3, & 6. 6. Recognize and apply soil and soilless media to growing applications ILOs 1 & 2 7. Identify greenhouse pests and diseases and develop a treatment plan utilizing Integrated Pest Management ILOs 1, 4, & 6.
