This laboratory course is designed to accompany EFDA 102 and provides students with hands-on experience in the safe placement, handling, and manipulation of amalgam restorative materials. Students will learn to apply the principles of amalgam restoration and to perform clinical procedures under the supervision of a licensed dentist or dental hygienist. Upon completion of the course, students will be prepared to perform expanded function procedures that involve the use of amalgam restorative materials. Course Outcomes: 1. Apply the principles of cavity preparation and tooth anatomy to produce clinically acceptable amalgam restorations in a laboratory setting. ILOs 1 & 4 2. Demonstrate proper handling and manipulation techniques for dental amalgam, including trituration, condensation, and carving. ILOs 1 & 4 3. Use appropriate isolation techniques and ergonomic considerations during amalgam placement, including the use of rubber dams and other isolation methods. ILOs 1 & 4 4. Evaluate the safety considerations related to amalgam handling and placement, including infection control and disposal protocols. ILOs 1, 2, 3, & 4 5. Analyze radiographs and clinical records to determine appropriate treatment planning for amalgam restorations. ILOs 1, 2, 3, & 4 6.
