This course is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of amalgam as a restorative material, including its composition, physical properties, and clinical applications. Students will learn about the safety considerations related to amalgam handling and placement, as well as proper techniques for amalgam restoration. The course is designed to accompany EFDA 112 and will prepare students for expanded function procedures that involve the use of amalgam. 1. Describe the composition, properties, and clinical applications of dental amalgam as a restorative material. ILOs 1 & 4 2. Analyze the advantages and disadvantages of using dental amalgam and identify clinical indications for amalgam restorations. ILOs 1, 3, & 4 3. Identify the instruments and equipment used for amalgam placement, and explain the various placement techniques for dental amalgam. ILOs 1, 3, & 4 4. Evaluate the safety considerations related to amalgam handling and placement, including infection control and disposal protocols. ILOs 1 & 4 5. Explain the various isolation techniques and ergonomic considerations necessary for amalgam placement, including the use of rubber dams and other isolation methods. ILOs 1, 3, & 4 6. Utilize critical thinking and problem-solving skills to analyze restorative dental procedures and identify potential challenges related to dental amalgam placement. ILOs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6
